Helpful advice on how to use Block'em (Android).
The Block'em app for Android is very simple and easy to use. But if you need help with any aspect of using the Block'em app, please contact our support desk:
To install the Block'em app directly onto your Android phone, please do the following:
- Run the Android Market app
- Search for "Block'em"
- Select the application, and commit to purchase
- Use your Google account to complete the payment
The Block'em app is designed to run in idle mode in the background until a new call comes in. Once you've installed the app, run it by tapping its icon in the Applications screen. That's it. Whenever you reboot or power cycle your phone, the app will launch by itself automatically.
Blocking a New Caller
When a call comes in from a new number which is not in your Contacts, after the call is finished, the Block'em app will ask you if you'd like to block or allow that number. If you don't want to receive calls or texts from that number ever again, you can block it and it will be added to your Blocked Numbers list. If you choose to allow the number it will be added to your Allowed Numbers list.
The same applies to a text message received from a new number. When the text is received, the Block'em app will ask you if you'd like to block or allow that number.
Unblocking a Blocked Number
You can unblock any of the numbers you have previously chosen to block. In the Block'em app main menu, tap on Blocked Numbers and then tap on the number you want to unblock. The app will give you the option to unblock that number or to forget it entirely.
Blocking a Contact
Occasionally you may wish to keep a certain Contact in your Contacts but not actually hear from them. To stop an existing Contact from calling or texting you, tap on Block a Contact in the Block'em app main menu, select the Contact you wish to block and they will be added to your Blocked Contacts list. When you block a Contact, all the numbers listed for that Contact will be blocked, not just their mobile number.

- What does this app do and why do I need it?
Block'em is an Android App that lets you block unwanted calls and text messages. The Block'em app was developed primarily to combat teenage bullying but can be used to stop any unwanted calls or texts, especially those annoying marketing/spam texts.
- Aren't there other blacklisting apps out there?
There are a few but none are as user-friendly as Block'em and most seem to have been developed by highly technical people for highly technical people.
- My phone's already got a blacklisting facility. Why do I need Block'em?
It's true that certain high-priced Android smartphones come with enhanced operating system software that can include basic call-blocking features. If you have this and if it works for you, then you probably don't need Block'em.
- What handsets does the Block'em app run on?
According to Google and our own testing, there are 369 different Android handsets on which Block'em will run, including all the most popular handsets from manufacturers such as HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sharp.
- What mobile networks does the Block'em app work with?
The Block'em app is independent from any particular mobile network and works with all of them.
- How does the app actually block calls and texts?
Good question. On the vast majority of handsets, Block'em will recognise that an incoming call is from a blocked number and it will simply answer and hang up the call after a few milliseconds. With texts from blocked numbers, the text message is deleted and not even logged.
- Are blocked calls logged?
Yes, but in your phone's call log, not within the Block'em app. Because calls from blocked numbers are actually answered and then immediately hung up, they will still appear in your call log. This is important in case you ever need to demonstrate that a certain caller is attempting to bother you.
- Does a blocked caller know they are being blocked?
No, not directly. The experience for the blocked caller is simply that the call they are making seems to go dead, without even hearing a ringing tone. With text messages, they get absolutely no feedback at all and have no idea if their text message was received or not.
- Why would I want to block one of my Contacts?
Occasionally you may wish to keep a certain Contact in your Contacts but not actually hear from them. You can still contact them or look up their details in your Contacts and that may still be useful to you.
- What does "Block Unknown Numbers" mean?
This option, if selected, will cause your phone to automatically block any and every cal and text message from anyone who is not either in your Contacts or already listed as an Allowed Number within your Block'em app.
- What is an Allowed Number?
An Allowed Number is a number that you've previously told Block'em not to block but that is not listed in your Contacts.
